Telecourses
A telecourse is a complete and integrated
instructional system that typically includes TeleVideo programs (reflecting
the contributions of top scholars and curriculum designers from around the
U.S.A.), a course textbook, and a variety of other instructional materials.
Each telecourse has a KVCC instructor who creates assignments and is
available to provide assistance and guidance throughout the semester. All
telecourses require the completion of assigned reading from texts and study
guides, along with written papers and examinations.
The total time required for telecourse completion is 16 weeks, which is the
same amount of time as for any other on-campus class at Kalamazoo Valley
Community College. The primary advantage is the flexibility of the viewing
schedule. Telecourses are very helpful to students whose job or home
responsibilities limit the time they can spend in the classroom.
Students can apply telecourse credits toward their degree of study.
Telecourse credits transfer to other colleges and universities the same way
as an on-campus class. KVCC transcripts do not record the mode of
instruction, only the course number.
Students may view telecourses in one of three ways: (1) on Community Access
Center and Cable Connection Access Center channels (a TV schedule is mailed
to the student s home at the beginning of each semester), (2) at the KVCC
Texas Township and Arcadia Commons Campus libraries, Parchment and Vicksburg
libraries, and (3) by renting tapes from the KVCC Bookstore.
At the beginning of each semester, an orientation session is held allowing
students to meet their instructor, and to learn about course requirements.
