The Golf Program

The golf program at KVCC, under Coach Shilts' direction, has existed since 1979. KVCC has enjoyed numerous successes and has remained more than competitive through the years. When the NJCAA established Division II golf in 1990, KVCC's Evan Dewulf captured the first National Championship Medalist honor at the 72-hole tournament held in Scottsdale, Arizona. Several other KVCC golfers have since qualified for and participated in the expanded Division II tournament. Among them are All Americans Rick Tiller and Tim Hux, and National Qualifiers Tim Klunder, Doug Biro, Kevin Barczak, Brian Marvin, Jason Ray, Joe Dubnicka, Jeff Troyer, Dan Meersman, Jason Dubnicka, Jim Rohrstaff, Nick Hodge, Cory Johnson, Ricky Shilts, and, most recently, Ryan Adams, Clif Johnson, Matt Doherty, Chase Vandenberg, and the entire 2004 team, Will Stark, Chase VandenBerg, Bret Feaster, Matt Huntington, and Matt Nordquist.

Coach Shilts is currently serving as NJCAA Region XII Golf Director. The 2006 Regional was held at Bedford Valley Golf Course. To qualify for the tournament, Michigan schools must finish in the top half of the entries in the MCCAA State Tournament. The Cougars qualified for the 27th consecutive year in the 54-hole State Tournament hosted at the Ridge Course at Crystal Mountain.  KVCC responded in the 2004 Regional by upsetting no. 2 Mott CC and claiming its first ever Regional Championship.  The 2004-05 team averaged 307.5, the lowest average in KVCC history.  That season, the Cougars played in the National Tournament at Goose Pond Colony near Scottsboro, Alabama, finishing 13th in the nation.

Fall qualifying is held by KVCC. Interested participants should contact Coach Shilts at (269) 488-4393 before the fall semester. Candidates must be able to shoot at least in the high 70's or low 80's from the back tees on a regulation golf course and should sign in at the Athletic Office on the first day of fall classes. Physicals and insurance requirements must be met before the start of fall tryouts.
