major
Coach's Comments:
"Sean is a reserve guard on the two time Class A State
Champions, Pontiac Northern. His great enthusiasm for the game and
his academic determination have earned him a spot on the team. His
fundamental skills and physical strength will have to improve rapidly for
him to see much playing time this year, but players with his desire always
improve rapidly, so who knows?" |

Brent (BJ) Jameson #5 5'10"
155 FR Guard
Corunna High School, Corunna
...coached by former Cougar, John Fattal...tri-captain

Roll achiever...his basketball team won conference and district
championship honors last season...set a school record with 137
assists...3.27 high school GPA...majoring in Secondary Education with an
interest in coachingCoach's Comments: "BJ
is an extremely spirited player. His unselfish approach and
exceptional aggressiveness help motivate others around him to play
harder. He is a natural point guard. His biggest challenges
will be to defend bigger guards and stay under control as he runs the
offense. Because he comes to play every day, he is a pleasure to
have on the team."

Gerald
Fletcher #11
5'11" 165
FR Guard
Whitmer High School, Toledo
...First Team All Conference & 2nd Team All District
in tough Toledo Great Lakes Public School league...MVP and Best Defensive Player on
his team...has played both point guard and off guard in high
school...averaged 16 points per game...coached by Bruce Smith...versatile performer
with solid potential to become a fine college player...Business major
Coach's Comments: "Gerald is a 'young'
freshman, only recently turning 18. His excellent team attitude and
intense play should result in rapid improvement. He is being asked
to become proficient at both point and 2 guard. His defensive
quickness and his eagerness to learn make him a key player for us this
season. He must improve his shot selection and his ability to play
position defense in order to reach his full potential." |
 |
Ricky Shilts #13 6'0"
185 SO Guard
Kalamazoo Central High School
...recently selected as Co-Captain for this season's
squad...key performer on 2001 24-4 Class A State Runners-up Maroon
Giants...averaged 11.8 points and 4.3 assists in league action at KVCC
last season...led the team in 3's made (69) and 3-pt pct (.426)...last
year's MVP on the KVCC golf team...recently selected as Dale B. Lake Award
recipient for outstanding male student athlete for 2002 at
KVCC...continues to recover from foot and nose surgeries resulting from a serious car accident in
July, 2001...3.12 college GPA... would like to coach
basketball and/or golf in the future...Elementary Education majorCoach's
Comments: "Despite his serious car accident in the summer of
2001, Ricky made a significant contribution to last year's
successes. He has gained strength and size and should be prepared to
make an even bigger impact this season. His ability to shoot and
pass have continued to improve as have his defensive prowess and his
dribbling skills. Perhaps his greatest assets are his hustle,
determination, and unselfishness. He is a joy to coach. We are counting on his
leadership." |
 |
Arthur Price #15 5'8"
145 FR Guard
Fairfield Central High School, Winnsboro, SC
...has played for former Cougar, Seth Gilmer...helped his
team win the 3A State Championship in SC...transferring
from Southern Wesleyan University...red-shirted last season
there...averaged 14 points and 9 assists/game while earning All Region
honors in high school...also was All Region in track two years in high
school ...Business MajorCoach's Comments:
"Despite his size, Arthur was highly
recommended by Coach Gilmer. He is a true Southern gentleman and has
worked very hard to develop his skills. He is a point guard who
dribbles well and can run the team. His amount of playing time this
season may well depend upon his ability to defend taller, stronger guards
and upon his ability to take care of the ball. His work ethic and
his excellent team attitude should enable rapid improvement." |
 |
Bilal Muhammed #21 6'2"
185 SO Guard
Ottawa Hills High School, Grand Rapids
...Bilal is transferring from GRCC where he played
successfully two seasons ago...scored 23 vs the Cougars at GRCC in
2001...achieved Honor Roll status in high school...First Team All
Conference his senior year...won MVP honors in a
high school Christmas tournament...was part of a Class A State
Championship team at Ottawa Hills, with former Cougar giant, Jeff Rabey
...Elementary
Education majorCoach's Comments: "Bilal
contacted us last year, asking about transferring. He was told that
he would have to go to summer school to establish his eligibility.
He traveled from Grand Rapids to KVCC this past summer, earning a 4.0 in
Biology and a 2.5 in College Writing. Bilal is a versatile performer
with good basketball instincts. He's the only lefty on the team, but
he has the ability to make a major contribution. He is solid
fundamentally now, but his steady improvement in each fundamental area
will enhance his value to our squad. He is being counted upon
heavily at both ends of the floor." |
 |
Matt Dennis #23 6'3"
200 SO Forward
Charlevoix High School
...1999 graduate...2nd Team All Region his junior year
& 1st Team All Region his senior year in high school...averaged 14
points per game in
final high school season...1st
team All Conference selection on 21-6 team...coached by Keith Haske...after
attending Cornerstone University and North Central Michigan College, he
enrolled at KVCC for "a chance to play collegiate basketball
and learn to become a coach"......served as assistant JV coach
one year and assistant varsity coach another year at CHS...majoring in
Business Education
Coach's Comments: "Matt's participation in
our program is a testimony to his work ethic. He did not play much
last year, but came back to give it another shot. He has greatly
improved his game, but still must become more consistent with his overall
performance to make an impact this season. He gives the program his best effort day by day.
He has the kind
of attitude every coach wants on his team."

 |
Tyler Jager #25 6'2"
190 FR Guard
Kalamazoo Christian High School
...2001 graduate...participant on Christian's Class
C State Championship team...coached by Jerry Mastenbrook...All Conference
football and track performer...transferring to KVCC after a year at Hope
College, where he participated in football but not basketball...3.0 high
school GPA...majoring in Business ManagementCoach's Comments: "Tyler
is a welcome addition to our team. His solid fundamentals make him
able to compete well, often against quicker, more athletic players.
His ability to improve his intensity and rebounding may well determine the
extent of his improvement over the course of the year. His excellent
teamwork concept, and his steady, dependable approach make him likely to
contribute heavily this year." |
 |
Ben Logan #31 6'0"
190 FR Guard
Sturgis High School
...transfer from Ferris State University...averaged 13
points per game in high school...won All
Conference, All County Dream Team, and Holiday Tournament All Star Team
honors in high school...also achieved Academic All Conference
honors...coached by Tim Miller at Sturgis...majoring in Business MarketingCoach's
Comments: "Ben is a battler. He understands
the game well, and works hard to improve his skills. His fundamental
soundness has enabled him to do well against more athletic players.
The amount of his court time this year may depend upon the development of
his dribbling skills. His consummate team approach makes him a
valuable addition to our program." |
 |
Mohamed Kane #33 6'3"
185 SO Forward
Jean de la Fontaine HS, Senegal, Africa
...Mohamed did not play organized basketball until his
last year of high school...he saw limited playing time last season...he is
an accomplished soccer player and an
excellent gymnastics performer...has switched his major from Engineering to Biology...mom is a
pharmacist in Senegal...wants to transfer to WMU after KVCC and eventually
return to Senegal to run a business
Coach's Comments: "Mohamed has shown
tremendous improvement in the short time he has played basketball. He loves basketball
and has an excellent attitude toward the game as well as toward his
teammates. He is an excellent leaper and is working hard to improve
his instincts for the game. He is a pleasure to have around.
The extent of his contribution this season will depend
upon the rate of his progress."

 |
David Stephens
#35 6'4"
185 FR Forward
Pontiac Northern High School
...averaged 14 points and 7 rebounds as a starter on the
highly successful Pontiac Northern squad until he was slowed by an
automobile accident...he recovered to make a significant contribution to
the Huskies two consecutive state championships...received Honor Roll
accolades and Perfect Attendance recognition as well as the Most Improved
Coach's Award while in high school...Finance majorCoach's Comments: "David
is a versatile performer who can shoot from the perimeter. He must
improve his defensive intensity and his shot selection in order to achieve
his full potential. The amount of his contribution to this year's
Cougar squad will depend upon his overall development. He's not
ready yet, but he could be soon." |
|
Wes VanDenburg #41 6'2"
185 SO Guard
Buckley High School
...transfer from Kellogg CC where he played
successfully in the 2000-01 season...attended Yuma High School in AZ
before coming to Buckley to graduate in 2000...averaged 12 points and 7
assists at BHS...achieved All Region and All Tournament (Parker) and All
Tournament (Cibola) honors in high school in AZ...selected as Academic
Athlete of the Week also...Psychology majorCoach's Comments:
"Wes was a last minute addition to our squad. He
did not play last season, and missing it decided to give it a try at
KVCC. He has played point guard until now, and will do the same
here, but is also being asked to learn the two guard
responsibilities. His size and solid court instincts often enable
him to neutralize a more athletic opponent. The amount of his
playing time will depend upon his ball handling and dribbling improvement
as well as his ability to guard the quicker guards. I'm glad he's
here."
|
|
Eric Moerman #43 6'4"
190 FR Forward
Plainwell High School
...coached by Tim Rieman...First Team All County, All
Conference, and Honor Roll recipient...averaged 10 points and 8 rebounds
per game on a 17-4 team his senior year...competed in varsity track early
in his high school career...Elementary Education major
Coach's Comments: "Eric has had a frustrating
start to his college career. He has been injured almost the entire
pre-season, and just now is becoming healthy enough to vie for a spot on
the team. It's too early to tell how good he can be because of his
injury status. He appears to be pretty solid fundamentally, but
needs strength and quickness to the ball to be able to compete on the
glass in our league. To get much playing time this season, he will
need to elevate his game quickly and significantly. His good work
ethic should work in his favor toward the accomplishment of this goal. " |

 |
Larry Weller #45 6'5"
205 FR Forward
Comstock High School
...coached by former Cougar standout, Mike McKinley...earned First
Team All Wolverine Conference honors in both his junior and senior
seasons...averaged 17 points and 10 rebounds his senior year...All Area
selection...Second Team All Conference as a tight end in football his
junior year and Honorable Mention as a quarterback in his senior
year...3.3 high school GPA...pursuing either a Liberal Arts or an
Accounting degree from KVCC
Coach's Comments:
"Larry should be a key player for us this season. He has
good mobility and can go inside or out to score. The speed of his
development may influence the extent of our team success. He must
become a better defender, and must improve his shot selection as the
season progresses. He's off to a good start. " |
 |
David Matthews #51 6'3"
185 FR Forward
Friendly High School, Fort Washington, MD
...1996 graduate of Friendly HS...has worked for U. S.
Airways and Prince George Public Schools in Maryland and Fairfax County
Public Schools in Virginia over the past 6 years...his enrollment at KVCC
was a result of a search for the "right" school over the
internet...a knee injury has sidelined him so far, but with aggressive
therapy, he hopes to swing into action soon...wants to major in either
Physical Education or Social WorkCoach's Comments: "David
comes to us highly recommended by men that have coached him during the
past 6 years. He has worked hard for this chance to play college
basketball. He liked what he saw about KVCC on his visit, and
returned at his expense the next week to register for classes. I am
hopeful that he will be able to strengthen his knee to the point that he
can play up to his potential. He has already contributed with his
attitude and work ethic."

 |
Andre
Gibson #53
6'4" 240 FR Forward
Detroit MacKenzie High School
..recently selected Co-Captain of this year's
team...coached by Gerald Weatherspoon...averaged 12.8 points and 8.7 rebounds
(led team) on last year's Cougar squad...his high school team knocked off perennial
powers MLK, Redford, and Finney to earn a trip to the Final Four at the
Breslin Center...scored 25 and garnered 17 rebounds against eventual State
Champion Pontiac Northern...Honorable Mention All City Free Press
selection...Honorable Mention Class A All State...Who's Who Among American
High School Students...majoring in Sports Medicine and Physical
Education...wants to be an athletic trainer
Coach's Comments: "Andre is much improved
this year. He is working hard to become a more complete
player. As his intensity and his defensive effort and understanding
continue to improve, he will become more and more valuable to our
squad. He gets to the line often and provides a badly needed inside
scoring presence on our team. In the early practice phase, his
passing and shooting skills have shown marked improvement as well.
If his desire to excel, both in the classroom and on the court, continues
to be strong, he should become a fine player for the Cougars this year and
a prize recruit for a four-year institution next year." |
 |
Vladimir Temelkovski
#55 6'8"
245 SO Center
Climax Scotts High School
...foreign exchange student from Macedonia...graduated
from Climax Scotts HS...the biggest Cougar of them all...has officiated in
his home country of Macedonia...played some minutes during the first
semester last year but dropped off the team to concentrate on his
studies...has great enthusiasm for the game...majoring in Business
AdministrationCoach's
Comments: "Like our other international student, Mohamed Kane,
Vladi is trying hard to learn the fundamentals of the game. He is
big and strong, but lacks the quickness necessary to utilize his size at
this time. Since last season, he has worked hard to improve his
game. In order to get some playing time this season, he must improve
his ability to score inside, and his defense. If he isn't successful
as a player, it won't be because he doesn't try. He has a fine team
attitude and will work hard to contribute whatever he can to our success."
