FR Guard
Muskegon
High School
…2003 high school
graduate…coached by Arthur Duren…led team in scoring during senior year
averaging just under 15.0 PPG…helped team with the 2003 District Title…solid
outside shooter with good quickness and dribbling skills…3.7 GPA Scholar
Athlete in high school…Secondary Education major
Coach’s Comments:
“George played on one of the finest high school teams in the state last
year. They lost to eventual Class A Champion
Rockford
on the way to the finals. George
is a pleasant person to be around, and his attitude on and off the court are
exemplary. The pace of his
development may well depend upon his adjustment to the physical, aggressive
nature of the college game. As his
shot selection and his team defense improve, he will become a fine college
player.”
Adam

FR Guard
Gaylord-
St.
Mary’s High School
…2003 high school
graduate…coached by Charlie Lovelace…ranks third in MHSAA for all-time free
throws made in a season (2002-03)…holds high school single game record for
most points in a game (49)…averaged 29.5 PPG during senior year…First Team
All-State Class D…Academic All-State with a 3.75 cumulative high school
GPA…former hurdler for Gaylord-St. Mary’s track team…Fire Science major
Coach’s Comments: “Adam
has impressed us with his hustle and physical play.
His achievements in high school were no accident.
He is a tough-minded, no nonsense point guard.
He takes the ball to the hole hard and will draw a lot of fouls.
He is in a tough spot as he’s battling two returnees at the point, but
he will contribute heavily as the season unfolds. Needs to stay under control while driving, and needs to work
on releasing his perimeter shot more quickly.
He is a welcome addition to our program.”

minutes per game last season for Cougars…2.5 assists per game with a .700 FT
percentage during the season…emotional catalyst of the team – received
“Mr. Energy” Award for his upbeat play last season…high school coach was
former Cougar, John Fattal…high school accolades include First Team
All-Conference, 2nd Team All Area, and Defensive Player of the
Year…Secondary Education major with an interest in coaching
Coach’s Comments:
“A definite candidate for the most improved player award this year.
BJ has worked hard over the summer, both in the weight room and in the
area of shot consistency. He is more disciplined, better defensively, and a much more
effective perimeter shooter this year. A
ankle injury has set him back a bit, but I anticipate that he’ll be a key
ingredient in this year’s Cougar basketball story.”
Gerald

Guard

High School

…averaged roughly 13 minutes and 8 points per game during freshman campaign
with Cougars last season…scored 6 three-pointers in a game against Lake
Michigan last year…High school honors include First Team All Conference and 2nd
Team All District in Toledo Great Lakes Public School league…Team MVP during
senior high school season….Business major
Coach’s Comments: “Gerald
has been a pleasure to coach. He
works hard and plays at both ends of the court with tremendous energy.
His academic load (18 hours) is challenging, and the competition at 2nd
guard involves 4-5 closely matched players this year.
It’ll be tough to earn playing time at his position, but I’m
confident that he will dig deep inside to contribute as he did all last year.
Key for him will be his shot selection and consistency, as well as his
ability to defend taller guards successfully.”

Quincy
Bell

Guard
Mattawan
High School
…2001 high school graduate…coached by Dan Hoff…came to KVCC following
Honorable Discharge from the Navy where he spent time in Japan…team won 2001
conference and district championships… an outstanding free throw shooter
during high school years – hit 100% of FT attempts in KVA Conference games
during senior season…led team in steals during 2000-01 season…received 1st
Team All-Conference honors during senior year…Liberal Arts major
Coach’s Comments:
“
Quincy
attended several of our summer basketball camps while in high school. His military experience helped him gain discipline and
maturity, both on and off the court. His
game has shown remarkable improvement since high school. With expected development, he could become a fine defender
and a solid fundamentally sound offensive player.
His decision making on offense must improve, but his eagerness to succeed
should continue to spark that improvement.”
Arthur
Price #15 5’7”
150 SO
Guard
Fairfield
Central
High School

Winnsboro

SC
…coached by former Cougar Seth Gilmer…selected
as a captain for this season…was a starter for all but two games last
season…energetic performer with a strong emphasis on defense…helped his high
school team win the 3A State Championship in South Carolina …hopes to bring his
game to a higher level this season and continue to play following the conclusion
of his KVCC career…Business major
Coach’s Comments: “Arthur did not score a lot
last year, but his dribbling skills and his good decision making provided a
consistency every team needs. He
must improve his ability to finish a drive against bigger, taller players, and
he must continue to work hard to overcome his obvious size disadvantage.
His shot has improved from last year, and, in spite of his quiet
demeanor, he should provide important leadership for this team.”

2001-02 Wolverine Conference Championship team…attending KVCC on a golf
scholarship, a sport he has played his whole life…holds every individual
golfing record at Vicksburg…Business major
Coach’s Comments: “Justin’s desire and work
ethic are role models for student-athletes everywhere. He has been a pleasant surprise with his skills, and he
provides great leadership by example. He
has forward-type skills but guard size, so the amount of his playing time may
well depend upon the effectiveness of his ability to rebound against taller
opponents and to handle the ball against quicker guards.”
Johnny

Guard
Loy
Norrix
High School
…2003 high school graduate …coached by Cory
Degroote…averaged 24 points, 8 assists, 4 steals and 4 rebounds per game
during senior campaign…helped team win 2003 Conference and District
Titles…also played football at Loy Norrix…Surgical Technician major
Coach’s Comments: “Ace made a last minute
decision to attend KVCC, and I’m glad he did.
He is an excellent leaper and possesses sound fundamentals, but he
must become more aggressive on the boards and more proficient at handling
the ball to realize his potential as a college basketball player.
He is a respectable shooter who is working to improve the quickness of
his release. He has the quickness
and anticipation to become a fine defender.
The speed of his development may well determine the extent of his
contribution this season.”
Arrun
Hubbert

Forward
Muskegon
High School
…2003 high school graduate…coached by Arthur Duren…aggressive rebounder
who led team in that category during senior season at Muskegon (9.2 per
game)…team won district titles in 2002 and 2003…competed in cross country
while in high school…Physical Education major
Coach’s Comments: “Another member of the fine Big
Red machine in
Muskegon
. Arrun has battled back from a
slow academic start to pick up his grades and to position himself for possible
playing time this season. He must
become more physical, a better defender, and a stronger rebounder to be able to
contribute heavily to this year’s squad.
In recent weeks he has shown a strong desire to make the adjustment to
the rigors of college basketball. This
team needs to become stronger inside, and Arrun may well be a key ingredient in
the quest.”

years while in high school…a sound player with a good inside-outside offensive
presence…one of three current Cougars to have competed in cross country in
high school…Elementary Education major
Coach’s Comments:
“Lorne has overcome ACL surgery prior to his final high school season, to
become a solid college prospect. He
has strength and quickness and has shown an ability to play several positions.
He could become a fine defensive player.
His overall skills make his development one key to our success this
season.”

Conference performer in basketball during junior and senior seasons…2002
Academic All-Conference…outstanding long-range shooter… enjoys long-distance
running and competes in road races during summers…General Studies
Coach’s Comments: “An unexpected late summer
transfer from
Adrian
College
, Greg has only one year of eligibility at KVCC, but his experience and maturity
have been a pleasant surprise for us. He
knows the game and picks up offensive patterns well.
His ability to defend quicker guards could be the key to the amount of
action he sees this year.”
David

…played for a highly successful high school
basketball program at Pontiac Northern…his team won consecutive state
championships during his tenure…significant contributor to last year’s
Cougar squad…in only an average of 18 minutes per game, he scored 11.7 points
and 3.9 rebounds…selected as a captain for 2003-04 campaign…Finance major
Coach’s Comments: “David was a solid performer
last season for the Cougars. He
provided offensive firepower game after game from the bench. His defense, passing, and rebounding have improved since last
year, so we have even higher expectations for him this time around.
His effort and performance on the court are matched by his determination
in the classroom as well. David
should be a major player for the Cougars as the season unfolds.”
Gareth

…2002 graduate from overseas…coached by Chuck
Miknis…transferred to Battle Creek Pennfield as a foreign exchange student
from Scotland…All-KVA Conference during senior season…All-State performer
and the all-time blocked shots leader at Pennfield…also competed in soccer
during high school…Physical Education major
Coach’s Comments: “Gareth possesses a soft
shooting touch and good jumping ability on the offensive side. He is one of our bigger players, so he is being counted upon
to fill a rebounding need on this team. Adjusting
to the physical nature of college basketball will be his greatest challenge.
As his intensity of play increases, his performance will follow.
The ability to defend at this level may determine the extent of his role
this season.”
Larry

Comstock

…key returnee to this year’s squad as he averaged
7.5 points and 5.2 rebounds in 23.1 minutes per game last season…outstanding
short and mid range jump shooter…aggressive on the boards…selected as a
captain for 2003-04…played at Comstock High School for former Cougar
standout, Mike McKinley…averaged 17 points and 10 rebounds per game during
senior season…must overcome nagging knee injury to regain his
effectiveness…pursuing either a Liberal Arts or an Accounting degree from KVCC
Coach’s Comments: “Larry worked extremely hard
over the summer, becoming stronger and a much better shooter.
He was impressive in our early scrimmages and workouts, and his
play and leadership will be a key for us this year. He is a tri-captain and,
after a solid year on last year's 22-8 team, should progress even further with
his game. His work ethic and solid classroom efforts make him a joy to coach."

…2000 high school
graduate…coached by Dan Hoff…high school teammate with Quincy Bell…voted
top ten player in KVA Conference during senior season (1999-2000)…was a member
of football and track teams in high school…quick reflexes with astounding
leaping ability…Computer Science major
Coach’s Comments: “Darrahyl has shown tremendous
courage in overcoming a serious illness and position himself as a key performer
for the Cougars. His lack of
physical strength is offset by his quickness and his cleverness around the
basket. He must gain confidence on
offense, and aggressiveness on defense and rebounding to realize his potential.
His positive attitude has driven his accomplishments so far and should
enable him to contribute heavily to the 2003-04 Cougar squad.”
Jamie
Smith #53

FR Forward
Loy
Norrix
High School
…played on a fine
1996-97 Norrix squad, then missed playing his senior year…coached by longtime
Cougar camp staffer and current Superintendent at Flint Beecher, Kenneth
Jackson…despite considerable time away from organized basketball, he could
still be an impact performer…has an excellent inside-outside presence, with a
soft shooting touch… Communication major
Coach’s Comments:
“After unsuccessful starts in
Florida
and
Ohio
, Jamie has decided to commit himself toward getting a college education and
playing college basketball. He has
made a good start in his classes and has shown considerable potential in
basketball so far. He is a finesse
player, but must become more physical and aggressive to be able to maximize his
contribution. Considerable time at
the Douglass Community Association has kept him competitive the past few years.
I have high hopes for his success this season.
He has worked hard toward making a major contribution to our program.
As his intensity and his fundamentals improve, so will his
performance.”

AZ
…2001 high school graduate…played basketball for only one season at
Yuma…team won conference and district titles in his one and only
season…standout baseball player in high school…tallest member of Cougar
squad…Psychology major
Coach’s Comments: “Jarett was recommended by a
player from last season, Wes Vandenburg. Jarett
stayed with Wes’s family for one season while in Yuma,
Arizona
. Jarett moved to California, and
after recovering from a dune buggy accident, decided to visit the Vandenburgs
and check KVCC out. He had to
establish eligibility by passing 12 hours this past summer, a task he completed
at Palomar CC in August, 2003. Unfortunately,
since being at KVCC, Jarett has had nothing but health problems.
The most serious has been a bad back; he is undergoing therapy to correct
his condition. At this time, his
status is uncertain. If he regains
his health, he could give our team a badly needed inside presence.”
Matt
Dennis
Assistant Coach Charlevoix, MI
First year Assistant Coach, Matt Dennis, has become a part

2002-03. He showed tremendous improvement as a player while at KVCC and
