Adam
Kerfoot #3
6’0” 175
SO Guard
St.
Mary’s High School, Gaylord, Michigan
…2003 high school
graduate…coached by Charlie Lovelace…Cougar Tri-Captain for 2004-05...played double digit minutes last
season, leading the Cougars with .860 accuracy from the charity stripe...got to
the FT line more times per minute than any other Cougar last season...ranks third in MHSAA for all-time free
throws made in a season...holds high school single game record for
most points in a game (49)…averaged 29.5 PPG during senior year…First Team
All-State Class D…Academic All-State with a 3.75 cumulative high school
GPA…state finalist hurdler for Gaylord St. Mary’s track team…Fire Science major
Coach’s Comments: “Adam
worked hard this past summer, building his strength and improving his dribbling
skills. Playing some point guard last year has helped his
development. Adam routinely plays hard.
He is a tough-minded, no nonsense point combo guard.
He takes the ball to the hole hard and will draw a lot of fouls.
He has played point guard early, but will probably also be used as a two
guard this season. Keeping under control while driving to the basket and releasing his
perimeter jumper more quickly remain his big challenges.
His defense has improved immensely since last season.”
Michael
Reith #5

FR Guard
Wooster
High School,
Wooster, Ohio
…2004
graduate...Coached by Mark Alberts...earned a total of 9 letters in basketball,
football, and track at Wooster HS...point guard sparkplug leading his club to League
Championships with identical 17-4 records his sophomore and senior seasons...his
junior year was even better (20-5) as his team posted a District
Championship...set back with severe ankle injury the day before practice
began...Secondary Education major with an interest in coaching
Coach’s Comments:
“Michael comes to KVCC with a strong recommendation from long time
Cougar summer camp assistant, Dennis Barowicz. He possesses the
ingredients to be an excellent point guard. He can shoot when left open,
and his solid passing and dribbling skills speak of his fundamental
soundness. His unselfish play will inspire others to play unselfishly, and
his determination and hustle will inspire others to play hard.
The early ankle injury has set him back a bit, but I anticipate that he’ll be a key
ingredient on this year’s Cougar basketball squad.”
Daniel

Guard
Union
High School,
Dowagiac, Michigan
…played at Cassopolis High
School through his sophomore year; then played his junior year at Dowagiac
Union, averaging 14 points and 7 rebounds...coached at DUHS by Al Westendorp...did
not play as a senior in high school...determined to attend a four year school and
hopefully play basketball there after KVCC...has exceptional defensive potential
and explosive scoring
ability...Business Management major
Coach’s Comments: “Daniel
has been a pleasant surprise. After a few years off, his game must adapt
to the rigors of college ball and he must get back into playing condition, but
his potential is impressive. His shot selection and the pace at which he
picks up the offensive patterns will be a key factor in the amount of playing
time he will see this season. He is a good shooter, a leaper, and a
slasher on offense. The competition at 2nd
guard involves 4-5 closely matched players again this year, so playing time at his
position will be precious and hard-to-achieve. I am confident that Daniel will dig deep inside to contribute
all he can."
Quincy

Guard
Mattawan High School
…Cougar
Tri-Captain for 2004-05...2001 high school graduate…coached by Dan Hoff…high
school teammate of Darrahyl Brown's...played
in all 30 games for KVCC last season, averaging 4.5 points in 13.7 minutes per
game...has increased his strength and his ball handling over the past summer...came to KVCC following
an Honorable Discharge from the Navy where he spent time in Japan…his high school
team won 2001
conference and district championships…wants to master the Japanese language so
he can become an interpreter...outstanding free throw shooter
during high school years – hit 100% of FT attempts in KVA Conference games
during senior season…would like to work with young people some day, helping
them see the importance of getting an education...led high school team in steals during 2000-01 season…received 1st
Team All-Conference honors during senior year…Liberal Arts major
Coach’s Comments:
“Quincy
is a summer camp 'alumnus'. He is an emotional player that is determined
to succeed. His military experience has helped him gain discipline and
maturity, both on and off the court. His
game continues to improve. With further development, he could become a fine defender,
and a solid offensive contributor. He must
get to the line more in the days ahead, and his decision making on offense must
continue to improve. His uncommon energy should spark that improvement.”

Forward Portage

High School
...coached by
Dominic Siciliano...Most Improved Player his Junior year...as a senior he
averaged 16 points and 7 rebounds for the Mustangs...Most Valuable Player and
recipient of the Captain Award his senior year at
PCHS...outstanding leaper
...1st Team All Conference in tough SMAC conference...hopes to bring his
game to a higher level this season and continue to play following the conclusion
of his KVCC career…Business Administration major
Coach’s Comments: “Dirail is a team
player with the athleticism and attitude to become a fine college athlete.
He must become stronger and more physical in order to hold his own on the boards
in our conference. As he gains strength, he will be able to finish his
drives better. His ball handling and dribbling skills should also improve
his effectiveness. Because of his desire to learn and his
"coach-ability," he is the kind of player that could improve
rapidly. He should gain significant playing time with his expected
improvement as the season unfolds. In spite of his quiet
demeanor, he should provide important leadership for this team.”
Bryan Davis
#25 5’8”
185 FR
Guard Washington
High School South Bend, IN
…graduated high school with honors in
2004…averaged 18.5 points and 6 assists for the Panthers...won 2nd Team All Northern
Intercollegiate Conference recognition...played in
South Bend Tribune Metro All Star game in June... interested in getting involved in the political process, especially with regard to the conduct of
elections...Electrical Technology major
Coach’s Comments: “Floyd Foston,
former KVCC employee and current head coach for both the men and women at
Cassopolis High School, alerted me about Bryan and asked me to attend the
Tribune All Star Classic to see him. Bryan had a good game, we talked, and
he decided on KVCC. Bryan is a combo guard with a great attitude.
His work ethic is outstanding as well. Bryan must become more fluid
dribbling the ball, and his perimeter shot should become more consistent as the
season unfolds."
Alan Robinson #31

210 FR
Forward
St. Joseph High School
…2004 high school graduate …coached by
former Cougar Gregg Schaffer...as a senior he won First Team All Conference
honors...former KVCC Cougar Basketball Camp MVP ...averaged
14 points and 5 rebounds per game
during senior campaign in the tough Big 16 Conference…scored 26 points in the
South Bend Tribune Metro All Star game last June...helped his team to a 14-7 record
last year…Secondary Education major...wants to coach basketball and teach Math
Coach’s Comments: “Alan re-injured a
chronically painful knee, leading to surgery in early November. His
participation this season will depend upon his recovery rate. Alan is a
strong post player with good hands and solid instincts for the game. Alan
will decide after his surgery whether or not to 'red-shirt' this season.
We are hopeful that his recovery will be quick and complete.”
Larry

...Honorable Mention Grand Rapids Press All City and All Area tems in both basketball...also
Honorable Mention All City and All Area in football where he was a strong
safety...aggressive combo guard ...Communications major
Coach’s Comments: “Larry has
excellent quickness for the college game. He must become more consistent
with his perimeter shot, and he must improve his physical strength in order to
succeed in the college game. He could become a fine ball handler and
dribbler, as well as a solid defensive player. His development in these
areas should determine the extent of his playing time this season."
Lorne
Johnson
#35 6’2”
180 SO
Guard
Ypsilanti
High School
…2003 high school graduate…Captain
of his high school team...achieved Scholar Athlete status during senior
year…averaged 4 points and 2 rebounds after working his way into the starting
line-up as a Cougar last year...voted a state of Michigan Top 100 player 3 consecutive
years while in high school…solid defensive player last season at KVCC…competed in cross country in
high school…Elementary Education major
Coach’s Comments:
“Lorne continued to improve last season for
the Cougars. He became one of, if not the best, defensive players in our
program. His consistency on offense, and his shot selection are the areas
he needs to advance the most. If he learns to take care of the ball
better, he could end up playing quite a bit at the point position this
year. His defensive skills should enhance his amount of playing
time. His development is one key to the success of this 2004-05 Cougar
team."
Matt

…2004 high school graduate…two
sport standout in high school...1st Team All State Honorable Mention in
basketball, and 1st team All State in football...played quarterback and
safety...majoring in Elementary Education and/or Special Education
Coach’s Comments:
“Nicknamed 'Philly', this lefty has been a pleasant addition to our
squad. He located KVCC via the internet, and is pursuing his dream.
He has excellent range on his jump shot, and he plays with energy and enthusiasm.
Matt is a fine team player, and his quarterback playing experience shows with
his strong passing game. He must improve his dribbling and his defense to
realize his full potential. The pace of his development should determine
the amount of playing time he earns this year."

Star Basketball Camp...spent last year and last summer
getting his academics and his focus together so he could earn a spot on this
year's Cougar squad...versatile swing man...Communications major
Coach’s Comments:
“Darre has already shown remarkable progress, both on and off the court, in
this his second year of college. His speed and quickness are his greatest
assets. He loves the game and has committed to rapid improvement. He
has the tools to be a fine defensive player, and as his concentration and
experience increase, so should his overall contribution. Darre's
development could be as important to the success of the Cougar team as any other
single key."

Miknis…saw limited action for the Cougars last season...trying to become more

team...received All-State Honorable Mention honors from the Detroit Free
Press...second in all-time blocked shots at Pennfield…also competed in soccer
during high school…wants to coach ...Physical Education major
Coach’s Comments: “Gareth has shown
considerable improvement from last season. He possesses a soft
shooting touch and good jumping ability on the offensive side. He is one of our bigger players, so he is being counted upon
to fill a rebounding need on this team. He
must continue to play hard, especially on the glass and defensively. This
year, we're trying to play him at the three spot, at least part of the
time. He will have to defend from this position, and he must improve his
dribbling and passing to be able to sustain his contribution. His
intensity of play has been better this year, and it must continue to improve for
him to make the kind of contribution he is capable of making."

KVCC...averaged 13.2 points and 8.0 rebounds on last season's 22-8
team...performed at a record setting FG Pct. of .663...high school teammate of Quincy Bell…voted
in the top ten players in KVA Conference during senior season (1999-2000)…was an
All Conference wide receiver in football and All State in the long jump in high school…quick reflexes with astounding
leaping ability…Computer Science major
Coach’s Comments: “Darrahyl
surprised almost everyone with his stellar performance last season. This
year he will be a 'marked' man as our opponents try to devise ways to stop
him. He is an unselfish finesse player that, simply put, often beats
others to the ball. Since we are not big and not strong, Darrahyl is a key
person on this team, especially as a rebounder. He was one of 14 finalists
last year for the prestigious Jimmy Valvano 'Comeback Player of the Year
Award' given annually to a college student-athlete by the Jimmy V
Foundation. Darrahyl has a soft touch on his jumper, and he will be
encougaged to look to score even more this season. He has gained
confidence from last year, a fact that, when combined with his aggressiveness on
defense and his pursuit of the rebound, should lead him to an even better year
in his final go-around at KVCC. With the extension of his positive,
consistent leadership, he will again be a key factor on this new Cougar
team."

Peterson...All St. Joe Valley 1st Team Selection in senior year...averaged 18 points and
8 rebounds for CHS last season...good jump shooter...WPE major...wants to coach
basketball
Coach’s Comments: “Matt possesses a
good understanding of the team game. He has a nice mid-range jumper and
good passing instincts. His best basketball is ahead of him. He must
become stronger so he can develop a low post game to compliment his perimeter
shooting. He seems eager to learn all he can about what it takes to be
successful in the college game. With our lack of big men on this team,
Matt will have ample opportunity to get some playing time if he develops
quickly. His ability to play defense, both full- and half-court will be
another deciding factor as to how much court time he will see this season.
I'm glad he's here."

year...shown tremendous improvement in one year, especially in his strength and
ability to catch the ball...fine student, currently carrying a B average...Accounting major
Coach’s Comments: “Mike has already
become a success story. His desire to improve his skills has been
remarkable. Our entire staff is amazed at how much stronger Mike has
become in 12 months. On a team without much size, Mike could continue to
surprise if he continues his rapid rate of improvement. He needs to add a
hook shot to an improving power game, and he must get better as an interior
defender. He also is working hard to boost his free throw accuracy.
His fundamental development gives our staff hope that he will be able to
contribute this year, especially by the start of league play. His uncommon
desire to improve has already inspired his teammates and coaches."
Matt
Dennis
Assistant Coach Charlevoix, MI
Second year Assistant Coach, Matt Dennis, has become a part
of the coaching staff after playing on two successful KVCC teams in 2001-02 and
2002-03. He showed tremendous improvement as a player while at KVCC and
his attitude helped shape the success of the teams he played on. Matt
assisted at Charlevoix High School during their MHSAA State Runner-up Class C
finish in 2000-01. Matt is currently the Director of the Basketball Minds
Summer Camps in Northern Michigan. He is pursuing his Bachelor's Degree in
Sports Administration and Physical Education at
Western Michigan University.
"Matt begins his second season on the KVCC
staff. For his tender age, he brings a wealth of experience to the
job. Matt has a keen eye for evaluating talent, both from the attitudinal
as well as the physical aspect. He is a tireless worker with a great
perspective on the role athletics can play in a student's overall growth and
development. We're blessed to have a person of his quality in this
position."
