Lady Cougars get back to takin' care of business. |
January 27, 2007 KVCC (95) at Glen Oaks CC (56) in
Centreville, MI
Now that's better! After
a "sluggish" performance on Wednesday, the Lady Cougars came back with a
vengeance against a game but out manned Glen Oaks team Saturday afternoon on the
Lady Vikings home court. "For the last two days we have talked about
nothing except playing well."
said a pleased
Coach Welch. "Coach Burg's kids always give great effort and these
kinds of games always make me nervous. You have a struggling team playing
at home with nothing to lose and I have seen something goofy happen all to many
times. I'm very proud of this team for getting back to working in a
business like manner for a successful outcome." The road win improved the Cougars
conference record to a league- leading 7-1 and a sparkling 18-1 over all.
Kendra Kutz again led the first half charge with
all 10 of her points and Charity Knight was her usual consistent, steady self
matching that total with 5 in each half, but the story of the game was the
second half offensive explosion of sophomore Kate Whittaker who scored 13 of her
game high 16 points in the second stanza. "I think Kate really showed us
today what she can do when she puts her mind to it." said an impressed Cougar
head coach. "She has had some super 'moments' in the past and has shown us
some glimpses of excellence and I think this could be Kate's coming out party."
The three double figure scorers had a lot of
help. The Cougars combined for a rather spectacular 28 assists on their 34
field goals and every Cougar got into the scoring act. Of note were the 9
point efforts of sophomore Betsey Dennis and freshman Heather Buren along
with a solid 8 points from leading rebounder (7) Kim Gear. "I was really
pleased with the way we attacked today." said a complimentary Coach Welch

Kate Whittaker breaks out! 16 points, 6 rebounds
League play continues this Wednesday as the
Lady Cougars host the Lady Raiders of Grand Rapids CC. Game time
in Cougar Arena is 5:30 pm. "We're taking them one game at a time," commented the Cougar coach. "But
this is a big week as far as the conference race goes. We're home for a
couple of games that should be excellent college basketball games. If we
continue to take care of business we're in control of our own destiny. We
play 4 out of next 6 games at home, but have a couple of toughies at Muskegon
and Lansing. It's an exciting time to be a Cougar!"
