Kalamazoo Valley Women's Basketball |
November 24, 2006 KVCC (71) vs. Columbus State C. C.(60) at
Owens CC in Toledo, OH
A vastly improved Columbus State team stormed out to a
36-31 halftime lead against
a KVCC team that was their own worst enemy, but couldn't sustain it as the
Cougars from Valley came back and took control with some timely shooting and a
dose of Defense that was missing in the first half. Columbus State was
help to 24 points in the second stanza with the "Valley" girls posting a 40
point total. "I was concerned with the way we
approached the game and we were probably fortunate to be able to come from
behind to win." Said Cougar coach, Ron Welch.
Again the Cougars dressed 14 players and
all saw time. "We play a lot of kids and today not all of them played
to their maximum potential." said Welch. "They have to
understand that playing time is based on performance and that demands your best
effort while your out there. That didn't happen in the first half.
It got a little better in the second - and so did we."
Charlevoix sophomore Betsey Dennis came off
the bench and exploded for
18 points and Three Rivers guard Kendra Kutz dropped in 13 points and dug out 9
big rebounds. The KVCC bench outscored their counterparts from Ohio 35-15.
Niles sophomores Amber Peters and Kate Whittaker contributed 7 and 6 rebounds
respectively as the Cougars won the war on the boards 40-27.
Although suffering thru an
uncharacteristic poor shooting night the Cougars were money late in the game
from the Free throw line converting on 12 of 14 in the last two minutes. "Charity
Knight, Kendra Kutz and Amber Peters were perfect from the stripe late." Commented an impressed Welch. "That's
how you win games. We got a lot of good shots that didn't go in today, but we
did enough of the other little things - play defense, rebound and take care of
the ball - to get the 'W'. Hopefully we'll shoot better tomorrow - if we
don't, we could get beat."
The Lady Cougars are now 5-0 on
the season.
