November 26, 2006 KVCC (70) vs. Edison C. C.(56) at Owens CC
in Toledo, OH
Old regional rival Edison CC from Ohio gave
the Lady Cougars all they wanted in the last game of the Thanksgiving "Turkey
Trot" round robin tounament hosted by Owens CC. After establishing an
"uncomfortable" 13 point lead at the half, they let the Lady Chargers from
Piqua back into the game with lackadaisical play, but were able to right the
ship in time to pull away to a solid 14 point win. The Cougars led by 18
with a minute to play. "We knew that we hadn't played up to 'snuff' in the
first and couldn't have a repeat in the second - but we did. We showed our
character by battling thru it and doing what we had to do." Said the Cougar coach.
"We're probably lucky that Feathers didn't play. She and the Zimmerman kid
are a very nice combo. Bottom line is we made some plays when we had to.
Good players make plays and we have some good players."
Kendra Kutz sparked the Cougars with 16
points and Betsey Dennis added 12 points on 3 of 4 shooting from behind the arc.
Charity Knight dished out 5 assists and Amber Peters led the rebound parade with
6. Kutz added 5 rebounds as the Cougars out rebounded the Ohio team by 5 -
42 to 37. Ten Cougars scored.
The Lady Chargers, who had placed 6
people in double figures the previous night, were limited to two double digit
scorers by the tenacious Cougar defense. "Our defense was solid - except
for a couple of stretches in the second half," Said Welch. "I
thought the effects of three games in three days caught up to both teams a
little bit in the second half. We established a more consistent effort on
defense and a bit more patience at the offensive end in the last eight minutes
after they had cut the lead to 49-48. I'm confident that consistency will
happen for us - I'm just not certain of how soon. We have to get a little
better every day."
The Lady Cougars are now 7-0 on
the season.
