Women's Basketball comes home & wins tenth! |
December 8, 2006 KVCC (91) vs. Cuyahoga C. C.(56) at
Kalamazoo, MI
Playing at home for the first time since
the 4th of November, the 4th ranked
Lady Cougars jumped off to an early lead against visiting Cuyahoga CC from the
Cleveland area in what was supposed to be the second game of the Holiday Invitational Friday night
in Cougar arena. "They were
a very game bunch, but there just weren't enough of them. Our team defense
and several real solid individual scoring efforts
were the keys to the win." Said the Cougar coach.
"Kendra Kutz was almost un-guardable with 14 in the first half and ended
with 20 points. And she had plenty of help. Telisha Saunders came of the
bench and scored 10 straight points midway thru the half and Jealyn Foston added
8 in the half on the strength of a pair of three point bombs. "When we're
shooting the ball like that, there are a lot of teams that are going to have
problems with us, but defense is ALWAYS the constant. It's a source of great
pride for us and it's what we hang our hat on."
Four other Cougars joined Kutz in double
figures. Saunders ended with 12, as did point guard "Spanky" Karasiewicz.
Karasiewicz also had a pair of treys. Cougars leading scorer Charity
Knight also had a solid 10 points, and Foston ended with 10 also. Point guard Amber Peters,
Knight and Karasiewicz all chipped in with 5 assists each and Kim Gear lead the
dominant effort on the boards with a season high11 boards and 4 blocked shots.
"It's definitely a 'pick your poison' situation if your the opponent." says
Welch. "We have a lot of weapons - that's the strength of our team."
The Challengers from Cleveland made it interesting in the second half as
the Cougars seemed to leave their intensity in the locker room at halftime.
"I was disappointed in the way we came out after playing an exceptional first
half.(it was 52-28 at the half)" pointed out the veteran Cougar coach. "I
think we can learn a lesson about how we have to play with intensity and
enthusiasm ALL the time for us to play at our highest level. When we're not
playing as hard as we can with everyone contributing, we can turn into a very
average team. If we don't lose that lesson, then it will have been a
beneficial experience. We're still a work in progress. I can hardly wait to see
what the finished product will produce."
The Lady Cougars are now 10-0 on
the season and hit the road again next Saturday for a game with another
nationally ranked team in the Kankakee Cavaliers. The Cougars have yet to
win at the Illinois school, with the home team taking the win every other year
in the home and home series.
Good - another goal!
League play starts on Wednesday
January 3rd with the Glen Oaks Vikings visiting Cougar Arena at 5:30 pm
