Coach's comments:
"A good effort on the weekend to start our
season." said Welch. "A lot of people did some pretty nice
things and it was good for the freshmen to 'get their feet wet', so to speak,
but the reality is that the water's going to get a lot hotter real quick, so
there's not much time to enjoy it. We did some things that, if not corrected,
will have very poor results in the future, but I loved the effort and the way we
played together. That's a great place to start and build on."
The teams coming in for the weekend (Edison, Columbus
State and Owens - all from Ohio) have only two losses combined and will provide
a stiff test for the young Cougars. Play will start at 3:00 on
Friday and continue Saturday and Sunday with the final game on Sunday being the
Kalamazoo Valley v Owens match-up at 4:00 pm. The Lady Cougars open the
"classic" with old rival Edison at 7:00 pm on Friday in the featured game of the
first day. of competition.
These two teams know each other very well having played
in the Regional finals in three out of the last four years. "Last year's Final
still leaves a bad taste in my mouth." Commented Coach Welch. " We realize that
that has no effect on this game, but I'm sure we'll play a little harder because
of the rivalry that's been built up over the last few years. Coach Rank is
a great coach and I'm sure he'll have his kids ready, too. Should be fun!"
