Kalamazoo Valley Women's Basketball |
November 23, 2007 KVCC (92) vs.
Edison C. C.(85) at
Kalamazoo, MI
Coach's comments:
"This probably proves we can score," said
a relieved Coach Welch. "But we really need to do a better job of
guarding people. One of the gauges of how good your defense was is field
goal percentage and we let them go off for 48 points and 21 for 37 shooting
(56.8%) in the second half. That's just not up to Kalamazoo Valley
standards, but it's fixable and that starts the next time we walk on the floor."
As unhappy as he was with the defensive effort, there
was a lot to be enthused about with the offensive output. The Lady Cougars
shot 56.7% themselves on 17/30 shooting and went 19/25 from the free throw line
in the second half after only getting to the line 8 times in the first. "I just
didn't think we were the aggressor in the first half or for a good part of the
second half," explained Welch. "We were down 71-61 with about seven
minutes left and all of a sudden the switch turned on at the defensive end and
we started getting stops and defensive rebounds I thought that defensive
team effort keyed our comeback - plus, Caitlin Krull, Jeannie Closson and Ja'nee
Morton start making plays at the offensive end." The Cougars outscored
Edison 31 to 14 down the stretch for the win.
The Cougars will continue play at 6:00 pm Saturday
against a Columbus State team that absorbed it's fiorst loss of the season to
the lake Michigan Indians. "I'm sure Coach Crites team is going to be in a
foul mood after being upset tonight." said Welch. "We better bring a
better defensive effort tomorrow evening."
