Kalamazoo Valley Women's Basketball |
November 24, 2007 KVCC (72) vs.
Columbus State C. C.(73) at
Kalamazoo, MI
Coach's comments:
"Little things," said
a disappointed Coach Welch. "We need to do a better job with the
little things - valuing the ball - making 'puppies' - understanding our roles -
and that includes me and the rest of our coaching staff. We had our chances
in the second half but momentum seemed to be taken away from us when the Horton
girl would make a big "3" or an questionable official's call would go against us
- there were a couple of those. It's hard for me to blame the officials
tho, because we did not play well enough to win. After shooting a very
crisp 59% in the first half, we came out and shot 32% in the second, plus missed
half of our twelve free throws."
"I thought the defensive effort in the second half
was pretty good and the rebounding was much better, but our shooting touch went
away in the second half." Explained Welch. "You can do a lot of things right,
but if you're missing shots it doesn't really matter." Jasmaine Ruffin and
Ja'nee Morton both recorded double doubles. Ruffin led the Cougars with a
nice effort off the bench contributing a team high 16 points and ten rebounds.
Morton came it at 13 points and 10 rebounds. Shannon Dumond added 13
points and six assists.
Pre-season All American Nyesha Horton led the visiting
Cougars with 24 points and 9 assists. "Horton's a nice player."
Understated the Cougar coach. "The first half she was creating for her
teammates and the second half she shot the lights out. She's the best
guard we've seen this year. She plays the game under control and takes
what the defense gives her. Last night she was 4/16 and they got beat - I
think as she goes so will they."
The host Cougars will continue play at 4:00 pm Sunday
against a strong Owens team that subdued Lake Michigan today 85-65. Columbus State team that absorbed it's fiorst loss of the season to
the lake Michigan Indians. "I'm confident we'll bounce back. It's a
chance to show what we're made of." said Welch.
