Kalamazoo Valley Women's Basketball |
December 12, 2007 KVCC (67) vs.
Kellogg C. C.(63) at
Cougar Arena, Kalamazoo, MI
Coach's comments:
Strange game. Exciting game. Too many
turnovers. Too many offensive rebounds given up. Either will make a team
wind up in the loss column - but not tonight. So how do you win a game
like that? You shoot better. 13% better - and make more free throws
than your opponent shoots.
"One of the more weird games I've been involved in,"
said an amazed Coach Welch. "Your opponent's shooting percentage is
usually a pretty good indicator of how well your defense is playing. For
us to hold a quality team like Kellogg to 25% shooting in the second half and
28.2% for the game is pretty special. Our kids have really bought in in
the last three weeks and have become a much better defensive team. That
was important in this game - as it is in every game."
KVCC moved to 2 - 0 in league play with the tight home
win.
"We had an 'uneasy' 13 point lead with about 7 minutes
left," said a relieved Cougar coach. "You just had to know they were going
to make a run at us and they actually took the lead for a couple of possessions,
but I really thought our kids showed a lot of character in being able pull it
back together and make some plays at the end of the game. I'm proud of
them."
Post players Jeannie Closson (21 pts./12 rebs) and
Caitlin Krull (12 pts./10 reb) along with swing player Ja'nee Morton (14 pts/8
rebs) led the charge for the Cougars. Christina Edwards with 19 points and
Pokey Gillespie with 13 points led the Bruins.
Next up for the Cougars is a home contest with
Kankakee CC, the #2 team
in the country. Game time at Cougar arena is 1:00pm
