Kalamazoo Valley Women's Basketball |
January 16, 2008 KVCC (55) vs.
Lansing (47) at
Cougar Arena, Kalamazoo, MI
Coach's comments:
"Not a real pretty win." said Ron Welch after his Lady Cougars
got a hard fought win over Lansing tonight. "But, we'll take it. I
thought we were much better defensively and were able to make enough plays on
the offensive end to come away with the win. We still need to be better
with our half court offense. Going back to the first semester we had lost
three close games in a row and to get this win is huge."
The game had a very deliberate pace in the
first half with neither team able to create much offense and the Cougars led
26-24 at the half. After the break the KVCC team attempted to pick up the
tempo and were able to force several turnovers, but failed to convert those
turnovers into points and the neither team could pull away. "The pace
in the second half was definitely more to our liking," said Coach
Welch. "Lansing's Central Michigan signee Laura Baker and the freshman,
Feldpausch, kinda tore us up in the first half. Baker had 11. We did
a better job as a team in limiting her touches in the second half." Baker
ended with 16 to lead the Stars.
Sophomore guard Shannon Dumond led the KVCC
scorers with 12 and freshman post Caitlin Krull posted her second straight solid
game with 11 points and 8 rebounds. The Cougar bench, led by Jessica
Sanders seven rebounds, contributed heavily to the win. The defense forced
25 Lansing turnovers which resulted in 17 more shots for the local team.
Good thing because Lansing actually outshot the Cougars, percentage-wise. There
were only nine free throws shot in the game with Lansing going 5/7 and the
Cougars finishing off the back end of two old fashioned three point plays for a
total of two. "That is, without a doubt, a low in free throws attempted in
a game for our program." said an amazed Welch. "We must do a better
job of getting to the line."
The win moved the Cougars record in the league to 3-2.
Lansing drops to 2-4 in the Western Conference.
The Cougars home stand continues, with a home game on
Friday night against league leader Lake Michigan. Game time in Cougar arena
is set for a 5:30 start. Admission is free.
