February 15, 2008 KVCC (61) at
Lake Michigan (54) at Lake Michigan College in Benton Harbor, MI
Coach's comments:
"Not an easy place to play," said Coach Ron Welch after a hard
fought road win at Lake Michigan, "And that's a pretty darn good
basketball team we just beat. They play hard and Ericka Sheffler is a
player." Sheffler led the Indians with 21 points.
With the tight conference win the Cougars move
two games ahead of LMC in the battle for third and have the tie-breaker with
their previous win over league leading Kellogg. Things would have to fall
just right, but 2nd place is not out of the reach of the Cougars if they take
care of business next week. At the very least they have assured themselves
of hosting a first round tournament game on Monday February 25th with an
opponent yet to be determined, but probably Ancilla College if the standing
remain the same. Game time will be either 5:30 or 7:00, depending on
whether the men's team is also hosting.
With the rest of the young Cougar team struggling
a bit on offense, this was a night when Sophomore Shannon Dumond would elevate
her game and lead her team to the win. Dumond scored 25 points, had 5
assists and 4 steals against the Lady Indians. Joining her in double
figures with a real solid game at both ends of the court was Three Rivers
freshman Caitlin Krull with 11 points. Krull also had 11 rebounds for her
sixth double double of the season. The Cougars also got another solid
performance from Battle Creek Central freshman guard, Ericka King. "Roni"
had 7 points, 3 assists (and only one turnover) and 3 steals. The
rest of the Cougars provided a consistent defensive effort that netted 28
turnovers by LMC, off which they scored 17 points. On a night that saw
Parchment freshman Jeannie Closson's string of double doubles end at eight, she
found other ways to contribute with six rebounds and six big blocks.
Sophomore Jessica Sanders continues to sparkle at the defensive end and was very
solid in the floor game garnering 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals.
