Athletic News Release
September 5, 2006
The 2006 recipients of the prestigious Dale B. Lake Presidential Award have been
named. This award is a yearly endeavor that honors KVCC’s founding President,
Dale B. Lake, by giving annual recognition to outstanding student-athletes at
KVCC. Exceptional academic achievement, outstanding athletic contribution, and
evidence of uncommon leadership and character are among the criteria for this
award.
This year the female recipient is Chelsea Acker.
Chelsea was an All League performer in both basketball and soccer during her
undergraduate years at Linden High School near Fenton, Michigan. Her outstanding
academic work in high school and her impressive ACT score and GPA enabled her to
be selected as a member of the KVCC Honors Program. Her accumulative GPA at KVCC
was a sparkling 3.87, a feat that has earned her Distinguished Academic All
American status with the NJCAA, and also helped the women’s basketball team
achieve a 3.37 GPA, garnering them Academic All American status as a team.
Chelsea has completed her two year participation in the KVCC women’s basketball
program. She earned All Conference honors as a sophomore, and she was selected
as a Co-Captain on last season’s Regional Championship team. Chelsea also found
time to go twice a week to a local elementary school as a volunteer reader, and
she participated regularly in the KVCC Fellowship of Christian Athletes huddle
group.
Coach Ron Welch comments that “Chelsea has shown strong leadership skills with
our program, and her work ethic was responsible for her becoming one of the best
defensive post players ever to play at KVCC.” Coach Welch continued by
remarking, “We have had a lot of players receive this award, and I think Chelsea
is one of the strongest candidates we have ever presented.”
Chelsea was a Liberal Arts major at KVCC, and has transferred to Grand Valley
State University, where she is pursuing a degree in Business Administration.
