Medical Coding Specialist

Upon successful completion of the Medical Coding Specialist certificate program, the student will be prepared to perform administrative procedures in the medical office or other health care facilities. The student will have a comprehensive overview of procedures and processes necessary for coding and billing health care claims on an outpatient level.  Upon completion of the required courses you will then be eligible for the 192 hours of externship.  Externship consists of practical experience in an outpatient setting. 

To obtain the certificate  you must successfully complete all the courses in the program.  These classes can be completed in one year beginning in the fall semester ending with your externship in the following fall semester.  Classes are offered in the afternoon and evening.  Individuals who complete the certificate can use the credit hours as a starting point for the Medical Assistant Technology Certificate Program.

 Application and Acceptance Process

Submit an admissions application to Kalamazoo Valley Community College listing Medical Coding Specialist as your program choice.  Take placement tests in reading, English, and mathematics.  We require that you complete the following prerequisite courses by:

  • Taking placement test, (contact counseling at 488-4123 to make an appointment.)
  • Using transfer courses as equivalent to the courses listed below
  • Taking and completing KVCC courses with at least a 2.0

Application and Acceptance Process

Apply for acceptance to the Medical Coding Specialist. Contact the Medical Assisting Secretary in Room 7450 (Phone 488-4543 or bmcgee@KVCC.edu). A completed Health Careers Admissions Packet is required to be considered an active applicant.

Standards of Progress

In order to remain in this health career program, progress to the next semester, complete this program and graduate, each student must earn a grade of at least 2.0 in all MAT courses.
