Background Info
With graduate and undergraduate degrees in English
from Illinois State University, Miazga has taught English composition,
literature, journalism, and film courses at KVCC since 1986. He
was instrumental in designing a course called Regional American Literature
(English 215) that provides students with the opportunity to read literature
from a variety of regions in the U.S.A., such as The Deep South, the Midwest,
Michigan, and The West.
Educational Interests
Having published essays on Louisiana writers Ernest
Gaines and Kate Chopin, Miazga spends time each year indulging his special
interest in the literature and culture of New Orleans. His love
of Southern culture reflects his interest in a variety of cultures
which has led him often to offer classes with an international studies
emphasis (designated IS in the schedule).
Special Irish Literature and Cultural Connection
Miazga has always featured the literature of Ireland
in his classes, and in the winter of 1997 he realized a long-standing
dream when he spent almost two months biking over a thousand miles while
doing sabbatical research in Ireland. This research resulted in
a book-length journal and hundreds of slides that can be accessed on the
WEB by clicking here.
