The
basic purpose of examinations is to measure knowledge. Evaluating a student’s
strengths and weaknesses can be beneficial to both the student and the
instructor in planning, teaching, and remediation. Exams also indicate the
student’s progress in meeting the requirements of the course.
Test
Preparation
Do’s
-
Know
the material assigned for the test … know the test format and length.
-
Over-study
… daily, weekly, and major reviews.
-
Review
the material out loud to yourself. Say it, write it, but don’t just say
“I know that” and skip over the material while studying.
-
Study
old tests. Use flash cards or other memory devices. Predict exam questions
and answer them well.
-
Have
confidence in yourself.
-
Avoid
Cramming (unless you have no other choice).
-
Sleep
and eat appropriately.
-
Learn
to manage stress. Yoga, meditation breathing exercises, visualization, and
positive self-talk are possible ways to do this.
-
Set
up for good study habits early.
-
Study
in the way you will be tested (i.e. essay tests – write as you review or
quiz yourself).
