TRS 094 Fundamentals of Reading I
3-3-0 (Lecture/Discussion) This course is designed for those
students whose scores on our standardized reading test indicate
that they fall below the 10th percentile of college students in
their reading skills. Students work on developing skills in using
the context, following directions, finding the main idea and
details, decoding vocabulary, and blending these skills to read
passages with greater comprehension. Two approaches are available
to students. Students who enroll in the self- paced section will
work in the Reading Center under the supervision of the instructor
and the lab staff. Those students who enroll in a regular
classroom section will work toward the same objectives in a group
situation at a specified time and room. Prerequisites: This course
is required for those students whose Reading/Study Skills ASSET
test score is 26 to 31 or whose COMPASS Reading/Study Skills score
is 31 to 43. In addition, all English as a Second Language (ESL)
students must have reached entry level competency as determined by
KVCC's ESL instructor.
TRS 096 Fundamentals of Reading II
3-3-0 (Lecture/Discussion) This course is open to all students at
KVCC who read below college-entry level as measured by a
standardized reading test or those students who feel their reading
skills are below the level which they need to succeed in college.
The course concentrates on vocabulary development and textbook
reading skills. Two approaches are available to students. The
students who enroll in the self-paced section will work in the
Reading Center under the supervision of the instructor and the lab
staff. Those students who enroll in a regular classroom section
will work toward the same objectives in a group situation at a
specified time and room. Prerequisites: Minimum ASSET Reading
score of 32 or COMPASS score of 44 or TRS 094 and TRS 105 or ENG
099.
TRS 100 Career Decision Making
1-0-3 (Standard Lab/Open Lab) Created to provide students with
decision-making skills, this course uses small classes and the
career materials collection in the KVCC library. Students will
become more aware of personal strengths and values, career roles,
decision-making techniques and planning, and how to apply these to
academic, career and life situations.
TRS 102 Intermediate Reading Skills
3-3-0 (Lecture/Discussion) This is a reading course open to those
who need more intensive work on comprehension skills or who have
taken TRS 096 but have not attained college-level proficiency.
Reading comprehension and critical thinking skills are emphasized.
The use of technology in reading and learning will also be
highlighted. Prerequisites: Minimum ASSET Reading score of 36 or
COMPASS score of 61 or TRS 096 and TRS 105.
TRS 103 Improved Spelling
(P) 1-1-0 (Lecture/Discussion) This course is offered to all
students who need a systematic approach to improving their
spelling. It is intended to help students improve their course
work, their occupational endeavors, and their personal writing. In
addition, students will, through work with sounds of the language,
be able to utilize dictionaries effectively to check their own
work. The students who enroll in the self-paced section will work
in the Reading Center under the supervision of the instructor and
the lab staff. Those students who enroll in a regular classroom
section will work toward the same objectives in a group situation
at a specified time and room.
TRS 105 College Success Strategies
3-3-0 (Lecture/Discussion) This course is designed to develop and
improve the student's techniques in reading comprehension,
note-taking, outlining, basic communication skills,
time-scheduling, research skills, and test awareness. In addition,
the course will utilize concepts in human potential to help the
student become more self-determining, self-motivating,
self-affirming, and empathetic toward other persons. Corequisites:
TRS 094 or TRS 096.
